ThinkPad T14 Gen 2 (2021) Review
One of my favorite 14 inch business laptops on the market, but it’s not perfect. There are things that could be improved, like the fact that you cannot upgrade the ram like the fact that there are some ports missing on it, that a lot of business users require, but that all changes with the laptop i’m showing you today. I just took delivery. Last week of the thinkpad t14 gen 2. now this has expandable ram and it also has a great plethora of ports, a lot of the ports that are missing on the thinkpad x1 carbon gen 9. we’re going to take a look at it right now: hey everybody! It’S andrew – and this is the lenovo thinkpad t14 gen 2 here for 2021 coming up, and while we take a look at the specs in the interest of transparency and full disclosure – i’m not being paid by lenovo i’m, not being sponsored by lenovo, all the opinions you’re About to hear are my own: lenovo is not getting copy approval. That means they’re, seeing this video for the first time, just like you now, this review unit was provided by lenovo and once this review is done, i’ll be sending it back. Pricing starts at 1267.80. I’Ll put a link in the description below for more information and where you can buy one now. My review unit has the 11th gen core i7 1145 g7 with v pro 16 gigabytes of ram, and it also has 512 gigabytes of ssd storage and it has a 14 inch full hd ips display with an anti glare coating.
It is a low power display that can get as bright as 400 nits again, if you want to get this laptop link will be in the description below and with specs and pricing. Out of the way let’s find out what you get inside this box, let’s open it up inside the box, of course, is the unit itself, but you also get a 65 watt usbc power. Adapter we’ve seen this one before from lenovo. You also get the extension cord as well. You get some documentation as well, some warranty information and, of course, you get the unit itself now holding this unit. For the first time i got ta say this: is that typical thinkpad finish it’s, that black finish with that military grade rating in terms of durability and at 1.47 kilograms or 3.23 pounds? Definitely not the lightest 14 inch laptop, but definitely portable enough to take with you on the go. Okay, let’s check out the port selection, let’s start off. On the left side, we get two thunderbolt 4 ports that do data charge, display out. You get your side docking. Connector, a usba 3.2 gen1 port, an hdmi 2.0 port, a headphone microphone, combo jack and finally, your micro sd card reader. Moving over to the right side, you get your optional smart card reader, another usba, 3.2 gen, 1 port, an rj45 port and finally, a kensington, lock. Port and on the back is a sim tray for the optional 4g lte, and i have to say this is a pretty great port selection.
The only thing i would maybe nitpick is the fact that it doesn’t have a full size, sd card reader. Instead, you get a micro sd card reader, but other than that. This is an excellent port selection. Now getting inside this laptop could be easier, i’ve seen it easier on other laptops. What you need to do is loosen the captive phillips head screws and be very careful when you’re popping off the bottom cover it wasn’t that easy. So you have to take your time. You don’t want to break anything, but once you do get it off, there is some things here. You can definitely upgrade and that’s, always of course very good. Now there is a ram slot here for you to upgrade the ram now. Some of the ram is already soldered into the motherboard, the 16 gigabytes of my review unit, but you can put up to 48 gigabytes of total ram on this laptop that’s pretty good. Now you could also upgrade the ssd, as that is slotted in as well. Although you get some very good reads and writes, as you can see here from these results, it has wi fi six along with bluetooth, 5.2 and both are working well so far. Now, unfortunately, that wi fi card is soldered into the motherboard. You won’t be able to upgrade it down the road, but it is wi fi six. So you should be good for quite some time and here’s the space where the optional 4g lte is it’s, a quick tell modem and it’s a cat 12 modem.
I didn’t see any option for 5g, at least not yet, but it’s really nice to have 4g lte for that business traveler who needs the always on connection when you’re on the road. You have a number of options when it comes to the display. There are four full hd options and one uhd option. Now i have the 14 inch full hd option: 1920 by 1280. it’s an ips display with an anti glare coating. It also is a low power display that can get as bright as 400 nits. Now i measured 387 it’s, not quite the 400 claim, but close enough, and i got ta say it’s good for both indoor and outdoor use, as it has an anti glare coating, no unnecessary glare or reflections, and you got ta love that, especially for productivity work. Now, as far as the deep black levels, it has some really deep blacks, really good white points, excellent contrast and a low delta e score of 1.66. That means this is a very color accurate display. Anything under two is considered very good now. It also covers the color gamut really well: 96 srgb, 71 adobe rgb 72 of the dci, p3 white color gamut and 66 percent ntsc. So, if you’re a content creator, this is a great choice for you to use to do lightroom, photoshop and, of course, video editing. Now the one thing i’m, not too crazy about – are those dated bezels, they’re rather thick, and especially here in 2021, i was hoping to see something a little bit slimmer.
It also has a 16 to 9 aspect ratio, which seems to be a relic of the past. As a lot of the other thing, pads in the line are now moving towards a 16 to 10., i would imagine that the next iteration of the t14 will have a 16 to 10 aspect ratio, and i think the overall aesthetics of this laptop again a little Bit dated from 2019 because it really hasn’t had any physical changes to the exterior since that time. So i think we’re due for the next iteration at least to have an overhaul in terms of the design but don’t get me wrong. The display itself is excellent and i have no complaints whatsoever with it. It really performed very well and i have no hesitation recommending it. So this is the front facing camera on the lenovo thinkpad t14 gen 2, but this is a 720p 30 frames per second webcam. What do you think about the video quality? What do you think about the internal mics as far as the audio quality? Let me know in that comment section below there’s, also, a shutter switch that allows you to turn off the webcam for more security and privacy. All right, let’s talk about the performance and my unit has the core: i5 1145 g7 with v pro integrated iris, xc, graphics, 16, gigabytes of ddr4 ram, and it also has 512 gigabytes of ssd storage, as i mentioned earlier now, as you can see from the numbers.
Definitely good enough for productivity work, microsoft, office, email, web browsing all worked well, if you want to consume media watch, netflix, amazon and youtube again. All worked well on this laptop now as far as graphics performance is concerned. This has the integrated iris, xe, graphics and, as you can see from the numbers here, not really great gaming performance, although you can get some playable frame rates, if you lower the settings, but there is an option for a discrete gpu, you can get it with the Mx450, my review unit didn’t have that option, of course, going with the integrated solution but, of course, there’s also two thunderbolt 4 ports. That means you can add an external gpu to give you more horsepower when it comes to graphics, the t14 gen 2 sports a 50 watt hour battery, and it did 9 hours and 17 minutes on my continuous web surfing test over wi fi at 115 inch. That means in mixed use. You can get anywhere from six to eight hours, depending on what you’re doing so your mileage may vary. So please keep that in mind, but if you do need to plug in it only takes about an hour and a half to give you a full charge with the included 65 watt usbc power adapter, and when i ran my 95 stress test, i would notice it Would turbo boost up to 3.6 gigahertz with a core temperature of 90 degrees celsius for about 10 minutes, and then it would drop down to 2.
5 to 2.6 gigahertz to maintain a cooler 81 degrees celsius. So, as you can see, it does throttle down somewhat to keep it cooler. Now, as far as the surface temperatures are concerned, it stayed relatively cool under heavy load, although you notice it gets a bit warm by the keyboard on the right side and the top portion on the bottom cover, and i didn’t notice any loud fan noise on this Laptop under heavy load, so that’s good, if you’re in a meeting, especially if you’re a business user, you want to keep it as quiet as possible and in that regard they succeeded and for those wondering you cannot open this laptop up with one finger. But it does have a 180 degree hinge. That means you can lie the screen all the way flat. That’Ll be good to get the perfect viewing angle each and every time now, as far as the keyboard itself is concerned, i’m absolutely loving this keyboard with its 1.8 millimeters of key travel, excellent tactile feedback. This is one of the best keyboards i’ve used in a very long time and i’m, not surprised as the thinkpad keyboards are pretty much legendary, and this is not going to disappoint you and it does have a multi stage backlight. That means you can get work done in a dark room or a dimly lit environment and as a business user. You always can appreciate that, and it also has dedicated communication keys, which is great for zoom calls and skype calls and any of the work from home needs it’s great to have it right there on the keyboard and it has a really responsive precision.
Touchpad two finger scrolling is working well as well as all the gestures there’s, also the trackpoint, which is part of the thinkpad dna, and that works well. I’M, not using it quite as much as i used to in the past, but it’s not going anywhere anytime. Soon. Again, part of that thinkpad dna all right, let’s talk about the audio, and there are speakers located above the keyboard by that grill below the display – and i got ta say these adobe atmos speakers, not the best i’ve ever heard. Certainly not the worst. Doesn’T have much bass, it sounds a little bit teeny and it could stand to be a little bit louder, not the best audio experience. If you want to have a better audio experience, use a good pair of wired or bluetooth, headphones. Okay, let’s bring it all home. What do i think about the lenovo thinkpad t14 gen 2, here for 2021? I got to say i really do like it. It brings a lot to the table, especially if you want a laptop with an excellent port selection expandability in terms of the ram and the ssd, a really durable design. With that military standard rating, and of course you get those two thunderbolt 4 ports which give you a lot of versatility to connect to different things such as docks, egpus, multiple monitors and the like, and i also love absolutely love that keyboard with 1.8 millimeters of key Travel typical thinkpad keyboard that i absolutely am crazy about now.
The things i’m, not crazy about you, don’t get a full size. Sd card reader anymore, throttling during my stress test case, is rather difficult to open, so be very careful when you’re doing that – and it also has a 720p webcam here in 2021 – should be a minimum of 1080p here in 2021, and it also has a little bit Of a data design not having gotten any kind of overhaul in terms of that exterior since 2019, it’s time for an overhaul, but there’s a lot to like about the t14 gen 2 here in 2021, i’m, going to give this a score of 89, definitely making the T14, gen 2 worth your money. So what do you think about this bad boy? The t14 gen 2 uh they put a nice coating on it. You do see some fingerprints, as you can see here, but not quite as bad as prior iterations, again it’s, that all black, but you could also get it in the storm gray, at least according to the specs from lenovo uh. I, like the design, although i think it’s a little bit dated – i think they need to update it. This is the same design from 2019 with the thick bezels uh. The rather dated design, that’s uh there’s no other way to put it, but it is still functional. It’S still got that thinkpad dna it’s got that wonderful keyboard. As i talked about with the 1.8 millimeters of key travel, none of this 1.
5 millimeters that we’ve been seeing as of late. This also has uh the expandable ram, which is great, especially if you’re a business user in your it department. You want to be able to expand this out down the road. It also has expandable ssd, of course, not the easiest to get inside. This, of course, be very careful when you’re popping off this bottom cover uh it can snap off some of the tabs on it, so be very careful take your time, but it is, of course, user accessible battery life pretty decent on this. With that 50 watt hour battery you’re, looking at anywhere from seven to eight hours of mixed use, i got nine hours and 17 minutes on my continuous web surfing test military standard grade rating in terms of the chassis. This can take a licking and keep on ticking typical of anything pad. You also get a three year warranty. I forgot to mention that in the video i wanted to make sure you knew about that nice to have that three year warranty backing this up now you could pick this up it’s on sale right now. The latest pricing, of course, will be in the link below uh, maybe something to pick up over father’s day great for the business user love the optional 4g lte. I didn’t see any option for 5g, at least not yet so. Keep that in mind, but nice to have 4g always connected internet when you’re on the road.
